Poet, activist and founder of the Atlanta Queer Literary Festival Franklin Abbott will read work from his latest collection, Pink Zinnias, along with Eve Hoffman, whose debut chapbook, Red Clay, was just published by Finishing Line Press. A BENEFIT FOR ATLANTA QUEER LITERARY FESTIVAL
I See Straight People will take place at the First Existentialist Congregation, 470 Candler Park Road overlooking Candler Park. Rupert Fike hosts for the second year in a row with poetry, music and spoken word to raise money for AQLF. Performers include Elise Witt and musical friends, Alice Lovelace, Stephen Wing, Bruce Covey, James May and Jon Goode. CELEBRATING DR. HAKI MADHUBUTI & THIRD WORLD PRESS
The founder of the acclaimed African American press will be honored for 40 years of publishing some of poetry's most noted voices including Gwndolyn Brooks, Gloria Naylor, Pearl Cleage and Sonia Sanchez. The evening will feature poetry readings by Theresa Davis, Felton Eaddy, Alice Lovelace, Lita Hooper, Opal Moore, Michael Simanga and Dr. Madhubuti. There will also be jazz performances. Rodney Jones is the author of eight books of poetry: Salvation Blues: 100 Poems, 1985–2005 (2006), Kingdom of the Instant: Poems (2004), Elegy for the Southern Drawl (1999), Things That Happen Once (1996), Apocalyptic Narrative (1993), and Transparent Gestures (1989), all from Houghton Mifflin, as well as The Unborn (Atlantic Monthly, 1985) and The Story They Told Us of Light (Alabama, 1980). He was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize. His other honors include a Guggenheim Fellowship, the Peter IB Lavan Award from the Academy of American Poets, the Jean Stein Award from the American Academy and Institute of Arts and Letters, a Southeast Booksellers Association Award, a Harper Lee Award, and the 1989 National Book Critics Circle Award. Poetry Atlanta and Georgia Center for the Book present an evening of local poets who have been published by the acclaimed Finishing Line Press. The free reading will begin at 7:15 p.m. in the lower level auditorium of the Decatur Library, 215 Sycamore Street. Books will be for sale. Poets scheduled to appear include JC Reilly - La Petite Mort; Robert Wood - Gorizia Notebook; Eve Hoffman - Red Clay; Ann Lynn - In the Butterfly House; Jenny Sadre-Orafai - Weed Over Flower; and host Collin Kelley - After the Poison.
